Choosing an air compressor
What information is needed to recommend a compressor?
Provide the equipment or air-tool make and model, required operating CFM and PSI, number of tools used at the same time, hours of operation per day, intermittent or continuous demand, available voltage and phase, desired sound level, and whether dry air is required.
Why is CFM more important than horsepower alone?
Horsepower describes the motor, while delivered CFM indicates how much usable air the compressor supplies at a stated pressure. Compare your tool's CFM requirement at its operating PSI and include capacity for simultaneous tools and recovery.
How should I choose tank size?
The tank provides reserve air and can smooth short demand peaks. Larger tanks can reduce rapid cycling for intermittent tools, but tank capacity does not replace adequate pump output. Continuous-demand applications still require sufficient delivered CFM and duty cycle.
What does “oil-free” mean?
An oil-free pump does not require routine pump-oil changes and avoids oil carryover from a lubricated compressor pump. Downstream filtration and moisture control may still be required depending on the application.
What does “ultra quiet” mean?
Sound ratings vary by model and test conditions. Lower-decibel compressors can be easier to use indoors and around customers or coworkers. Compare the listed dB value for the exact model and consider room acoustics, distance, and enclosure ventilation.
Can a 2 HP compressor run continuously at 100 PSI?
Do not assume a smaller compressor can sustain a high-pressure continuous load. The official selection guidance notes that many 2 HP configurations are not intended to hold 100 PSI or more continuously for extended periods. Compare delivered CFM, duty cycle, and the specific performance chart; larger 4 HP-and-up systems may be more appropriate for sustained demand.
Dry-air systems
What is the difference between 80% and 98% dry-air models?
Approximately 80% moisture-removal systems are intended for many general processes that benefit from drier air. Supported 98% dry-air configurations add finer filtration and stronger moisture control for more sensitive applications. Check the exact model specification before relying on a stated air-quality class.
When is ISO 8573 air quality important?
Dental milling, laboratory, medical, biotech, electronics, laser, plasma, and other precision processes may specify a compressed-air purity class. Selected 98% dry-air models are described by the manufacturer as ISO 8573 Class 2.3.1 configurations with filtration down to 0.01 micron and model-dependent pressure dew-point performance. Confirm the required class with the equipment manufacturer and the selected compressor specification.
Should I choose an integrated dryer or a refrigerated dryer?
An integrated desiccant-style system packages compression and drying into one installation. A standalone refrigerated dryer can be paired with a compatible compressor for many general industrial applications. Selection depends on required dew point, flow, ambient conditions, maintenance, and the cleanliness standard of the process.
Power, installation, and maintenance
How do I confirm electrical compatibility?
Verify voltage, frequency, phase, full-load current, plug or hard-wiring requirements, and recommended circuit protection on the product page and manual. A 230V single-phase model is not interchangeable with a 230V three-phase model.
Why does the tank need to be drained?
Compressed air naturally produces condensate. Drain frequency depends on humidity, run time, and system design. Use the supplied manual drain or supported automatic-drain system and follow the manual's safety procedure before service.

How quickly are orders prepared?
In-stock orders are generally prepared within 1–3 business days. Build-to-order equipment may require approximately 4–5 additional business days. Large equipment can ship by LTL freight and may require a delivery appointment.
How do I track an order?
Use the Track Your Order page with the order number and the email address or ZIP code used at checkout. Freight tracking may update differently from parcel tracking.
What warranty applies?
California Air Tools equipment is generally accompanied by a one-year manufacturer limited warranty for the original retail purchaser, subject to the exact model manual and warranty document. Keep your proof of purchase and serial/model information.
